AIDS Candlelight Memorial

International AIDS Candlelight Memorial – 2024

WAAC would like to invite you to join us in paying respect at this year’s International AIDS Candlelight Memorial.

Every year on the third Sunday of May, we remember those lost to HIV/AIDS related illness, and honour those who have dedicated their lives to fighting for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The Candlelight Memorial was started in 1983 by people living with HIV/AIDS as a way to remember those who they had lost during the epidemic, and to raise awareness when little was understood about HIV/AIDS.

How to get involved

This year, WAAC will be hosting an intimate sundowner at the Robertson Park AIDS memorial site on Sunday, May 19 with special performances sung by the Perth Sidenote Choir.

A smoking ceremony will precede the event, followed by speeches from WAAC staff, members of the community, and allies in the space, with a moment of silence paid to those who have recently passed.

Hot drinks and candles will be provided to those who attend.

When: Sunday, May 19, 5.30-6.30pm

Where: Robertson Park, North Perth (AIDS Memorial Site)

Who: All members of the HIV/AIDS community, loved ones and allies are welcome

There is no RSVP required, please attend at your own discretion.
