World AIDS Day

What is World AIDS Day?

World AIDS Day, held every year on 1 December, is a global moment to honour people living with HIV, remember those we have lost, and stand together in the ongoing effort to end HIV-related stigma.

Since 1988, World AIDS Day has brought communities, organisations, and allies together to raise awareness, share stories, and celebrate the progress we’ve made – while recognising the work still ahead.

In Perth and across Western Australia, it’s an opportunity to champion inclusion, update our understanding of HIV, and reaffirm our commitment to a future free from stigma and discrimination.

Why World AIDS Day Matters

HIV has changed – thanks to treatment, people living with HIV can enjoy long, healthy, full lives. But stigma still impacts wellbeing, health access, and community connection.

World AIDS Day shines a light on the facts, highlights lived experiences, and encourages everyone to play a part in creating a safer, more informed community.

How to Get Involved (Perth & WA)

There are many meaningful ways to participate in World AIDS Day, whether you prefer to show your support publicly or connect quietly in your own way.

1. Wear a Red Ribbon

The red ribbon is a powerful symbol of solidarity. Wearing one shows you support people living with HIV and believe in a stigma-free future.

2. Attend a World AIDS Day Event in Perth

Join local events, vigils, community gatherings, and awareness activities taking place across Perth and regional WA. These events celebrate resilience, honour lived experience, and bring the community together.

World Aids Day ‘No One Left Behind’ | 30 November, 2025 | Hyde Park

This year’s World AIDS Day theme highlights the urgent need to address ongoing inequalities in HIV prevention, testing, treatment and quality of life. It reminds us that too many people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and those living in regional and remote areas continue to face barriers to care.

The Great Pack Off: World Record Condom Packing Attempt | 1 December, 2025 | Forrest Place, Perth CBD

This World AIDS Day, we’re turning prevention into action! Each year, WAAC distributes over 100,000 safe sex packs across WA to help prevent HIV and STIs.

On Monday 1 December 2025, we’re bringing the community together to see just how many packs we can make in one hour! Join us from 8.45am to get ready and prepared for an hour of high-energy volunteering, teamwork, and impact. Whether you come solo, bring friends, or rally your workplace crew, every pack you make helps protect our community.

3. Learn and Share

Use the day to update your knowledge about HIV – how it’s transmitted, how it’s treated, and why U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) matters. Share accurate information with friends, family, or on social media to help reduce stigma.

4. Support Local Organisations

Perth has dedicated organisations working in HIV prevention, support, and community education. Donating or volunteering helps keep these vital services strong.

5. Have a Conversation

Sometimes the most powerful action is a simple, open conversation. Talking about HIV helps normalise it, breaks down misconceptions, and strengthens supportive communities.
